Final Draft

Many people are in the circumstance of internet and influenced by the cyberspace. Students research the data on the internet for their homework. A girl does internet shopping to buy her new clothes. Middle-aged couple book a ticket of play for their wedding anniversary. Internet takes a great part of life nowadays without distinction of sex or age. Hence, cyberculture has been an issue today, especially internet anonymity -  using another name or hiding real name on internet. Anonymity is the strongest and most important value of freedom in our society. Therefore, Internet anonymity has more benefits than side-effects, and it is needed in Korea.

Anonymity was not invented with the internet. Anonymity is developed through the history. It has been used in many purposes. A famous person did not use a real name to write messages. They do not want to be highly influenced by people's prejudice. Also, other people want to hide certain information about themselves to get evaluation of their message without prejudice and bias. For example, women authors commonly used the pseudonym of male and Jews used pseudonym to hide their religion. Women authors were discriminated just because of their genders. If the books were written by the real name of women authors, peolple did not read the books and ignored their writings. Anonymity is often used to protect the privacy of people, for example, when reporting results of a scientific study, when describing individual cases. Many countries even have laws that protect anonymity in certain circumstances. Internetanonymity has been developed since internet was developed. Especially, it was developed with development of World Wide Web (WWW). Internet was first started in 1969. Its first name was Arpanet. After Arpanet was converted to open network system, it became the current form. In 1990s, appearance of World Wide Web (WWW) make internet grow rapidly.

Information communications network law of Korea was amended in the January, 2007. In the late 1990, internet was spread through the whole country. As the users of the internet increase, the adverse effects of internet increase. - verbal violation, defamation and distribution of illegal information. The government considered that internet anonymity is the biggest factor of these situation. For that reason, The Department Of Justice added the article of name verification in information communications network law. However,  In 2010, the constitutional court of Korea gave a verdict that internet anonymity is conflicted with the constitution of Korea. They argued that they recognized the legitimacy of purpose of the legislation and suitability of way, but the law limited the freedom of expression. In the constitution of Korea, there is article that the government should guarantee freedom of expression. They said that there is no specific public interest effect to justify the limitation of freedom of expression, which is the value of the constitution.

There are reasons why internet anonymity is needed in Korea in two aspects. One of the reasons is constitutional reason. As mentioned in the narration, internet anonymity is against the constitution. According to Article 1 of  21 of the Constitution, the citizen has a duty to be guaranteed freedom of expression. Freedom of expression is basic essential human rights. It has to be guaranteed because it is the basic requirements of existence and development of the country. People express their opinion anonymously or in pseudonym to express their idea without restriction. It makes criticism of the power of country or majority opinion of society can be possible. Anonymity on internet is combined with speed and reciprocality of internet and overcome the hierarchical structure of the economy. Thus, it can develop the democracy of Korea. Internet anonymity is important thing because of that reason.

Universality is one of the reason. Most governments of the country do not regulate about internet anonymity. However, Korea is a nearly only country that make a law restrict the internet anonymity - except autocracy countries such as North Korea and Iran. The most characteristic feature of the internet society is openness. In other words, everyone can reach the cyberspace regardless of border. Our regulation of internet anonymity is far away from the regulation of internet anonymity in foreign country. It will restrict the connection between South Korea and foreign countries. Therefore, freedom of foreigners who want to connect with interent of South Korea will be restricted. It will cause social-economic loss in South Korea.
For example, Iran is the representative country that restrict internet anonymity and America is the respresentative country that has open cyberspace. American company can not trade with Iran company in cyberspace and Iran company can not make a profit.

It is true that internet anonymity has some side-effects. There are some people who argue that internet anonymity can increase using of abuse. According to study of Woo Ji Suk, Na Hyun Soo and Choi Jung Min, there are no specific results that internet anonymity is effective. After using internet anonymity policy, there is little decreasement of using abuse and slander. It is hard to argue that internet anonymity plays an important role. Without the certain effects of internet anonymity, it is difficult to ignore the freedom of expression and claim internet anonymity. The most important thing is that those side-effects are not remarkable than benefits in Korea. In Korea, internet has been developed since the latter 1990s. It is developed at a surprisingly fast pace, and level of Korea internet is ranked in the top. In this situation, it is difficult to say that the main reason of cyber abuse and cybercrime is internet anonymity. The benefits of internet anonymity are more remarkable than its side-effects.

Internet is opened place and everyone regardless of ages, and sex can reach cyberspace. Openness is the most remarkable feature of internet, and internet anonymity is the most important rule that should be guaranteed in cyberspace. Internet anonymity is helpful to make people express their opinions. Expression of one's opinion is the basic essence today, and it can be assured with internet anonymity. For those reasons, internet anonymity is obviously needed in Korea to make assure that people can express their opinion without restriction.

Week 14. Peer Review

Grade
According to the rubric above, what grade would you give this essay? Why?
This essay deserves a three. The perspective is unique - Most people think that robots will match human intelligence eventually. There is basic research to support some ideas.

How does this essay need to improve to get a better grade?
The research needs to improve. Too many ideas are based on opinion. For example, the criticisms of Kurzweil are not founded on evidence, just the author's opinions.

Thesis
What is the thesis?
Although computers are constantly evolving, they will never be as powerful as the human brain.

Is the thesis clear and debatable?
Yes and yes.

If you (The reviewer) wrote this essay, how would you have written the thesis?
The human brain will always be more powerful than computers.

Any other thoughts?
This is interesting. It will be difficult to do any conclusive persuasion because the essay has to be based on conjecture since it is a hypothesis about the future.

Classical Argument
Can you easily identify the 5 parts of the classical argument? If no, what parts are missing?
I don't see the narration. There is a brief mention of the history of the fear of computers and robots out thinking people, but it is more of a lead in to a confirmation paragraph then a narration. A good narration should examine both sides of the issue and what popular opinion on both sides say.

Does the introduction catch your attention? Does it comfortably lead to the thesis?
The thesis claims computers are evolving, but human brains are not evolving. It seems like that is a powerful counterargument to the author's thesis - not a strong starting point.

Does the narration give all the necessary background information to understand the topic?
Yes, but it is missing conjecture about the future. Just because current technology doesn't beat brain power, there is no reason to believe it won't eventually be able to.

Does the confirmation adequately support the thesis?
No. The confirmation only addresses modern day competitors to the brain, not potential future threats. Since the thesis is about the future, I think this is a significant oversight.

Does the refutation and concession address a realistic counterpoint? Does it adequately dispute the counterpoint, or respond in a reasonable manner?
I think the counterpoint is reasonable - Comparing the brain to a computer is difficult or impossible. However, trying to compare them in terms of their ability doesn't directly connect to the thesis. The essay started with a premise about computational power, not practical outcomes.

Does the conclusion summarize the article and address the larger significance of the thesis?
Yes. I think the final point that, if the reader disagrees with the author, we will cheat ourselves of future technological developments, and what we should really do is focus on using technology responsibly.

What suggestions do you have for improving the classical argument structure?
The narration is nonexistent or inadequate. Develop it - Tell us about those who agree with you and disagree with you. What are the stakes? If robots rival human brain power, so what? If they don't, so what? Why should we care?

Persuasion
When you started reading the essay, did you agree or disagree with the thesis?
I disagreed with the thesis.

When you finished the essay, did you agree or disagree with the thesis?
I still disagree with the thesis.

If your mind changed, why? What parts of the essay were persuasive?
I did not change my mind.

How could the author enhance the persuasive parts of their essay?
Spend more time considering the future of technology, not where it stands today. You're saying that because today you can't do algebra, you'll never be able to do algebra. Its illogical.

Research
Is the author using research effectively?
Yes

Is the research from appropriate sources?
Yes, although none of them are from academic research.

Are the sources obvious?
Yes, the sources are obvious.

Are the pieces of evidence relevant to the thesis or essay?
Usually. The quotes from the robotics expert aren't really relevant because he's only talking about robot power, not computer power.

Are there any parts of the essay that need evidence to support the claims?
The criticisms of Kurzweil definitely need more evidence. They are entirely opinion based. Perhaps more research into his career - Short comings or missing credentials - would help the argument.

Research 2 : Anonymity on the internet

Source

Anonymity on the internet
http://people.dsv.su.se/~jpalme/society/anonymity.html

What I hope to learn from this topic

I want to give readers background knowledge about anonymity before interenet and argue that anonymity is not something which was invented with the internet.

Note

Anonymity is not something which was invented with the Internet. Anonymity and pseudonymity has occurred throughout history. For example, William Shakespeare is probably a pseudonym, and the real name of this famous author is not known and will probably never be known.
Anonymity has been used for many purposes.
A well-known person may use a pseudonym to write messages, where the person does not want people's preconception of the real author color their perception of the message.
Also other people may want to hide certain information about themselves in order to achieve a more unbiased evaluation of their messages. For example, in history it has been common that women used male pseudonyms, and for Jews to use pseudonyms in societies where their religion was persecuted.
Anonymity is often used to protect the privacy of people, for example when reporting results of a scientific study, when describing individual cases.
Many countries even have laws which protect anonymity in certain circumstances. Examples:
A person may, in many countries, consult a priest, doctor or lawyer and reveal personal information which is protected. In some cases, for example confession in catholic churches, the confession booth is specially designed to allow people to consult a priest, without seeing him face to face.
The anonymity in confessional situations is however not always 100 %. If a person tells a lawyer that he plans a serious crime, some countries allow or even require that the lawyer tell the police. The decision to do so is not easy, since people who tell a priest or a psychologist that they plan a serious crime, may often do this to express their feeling more than their real intention.
Many countries have laws protecting the anonymity of tip-offs to newspapers. It is regarded as important that people can give tips to newspapers about abuse, even though they are dependent on the organization they are criticizing and do not dare reveal their real name.
Advertisement in personal sections in newspapers are almost always signed by a pseudonym for obvious reasons.

Final thoughts

I think it is good information to argue that anonymity is existed before interent is invented so it makes opponents hard to argue that interenet anonymity is not natural.

Week 9. Refutation and Concession

1. What is my thesis?
Internet anonymity is needed in Korea.

2. What is the opposite position?
Internet anonymity is not needed in Korea.

3. What arguments can I anticipate?
1) internet anonymity can restrict the using of abuse in internet
2) side-effect is bigger than benefits

4. How will I counter those arguments?
1) not true. no specific results.
2) not always true. benefits are bigger than side-effect in Korea society

My Refutation and Concession

It is true that internet anonymity has some side-effects. There are some people who argue that internet anonymity can increase using of abuse. According to study of Woo Ji Suk, Na Hyun Soo and Choi Jung Min, there is no specific results that internet anonymity is effective. After using internet anonymity policy, there is little decreasement of using abuse and slander. It is hard to argue that internet anonymity plays a important role. Without the certain effects of internet anonymity, it is difficult to ignore the freedom of expression and claim internet anonymity. The most important thing is that that side-effects are not remarkable than benefits in Korea. In Korea, internet has been developed since the latter 1990s. Week 8. The Confirmation

1. What is my thesis?
Internet anonymity is needed in Korea.

2. What types of source am I using to defend my thesis?
The constitution of Korea

3. Are my arguments mostly based on evidence, logic or emotion?
My arguments are mostly based on logic. My arguments have studies to support my reasons. But it is not enough.

My Confirmation

There are reasons why internet anonymity is needed in Korea in two aspects. One of the reasons is constitutional reason. As mentioned in the narration, internet anonymity is against the constitution. According to Article 1 of  21 of the Constitution, the citizen has a duty to be guaranteed freedon of expression. Freedom of expression is basic essential human rights. The most characteristic feature of internet society is openness. In other words, everyone can reach the cyberspace regardless of border. Our own regulation of interent anonymity is far away from the regulation of internet anonymity in foriegn country. It is only the cause that accomplish the public interest.

Week 7. The Narration

My persuasive argument thesis is  Internet anonymity is needed in Korea.

1. What do people already know about my topic?
Internet anonymity is big issue in nowadays.

2. What research has already been done about my topic?
Internet anonymity was already found unconstitutional in 2012.

3. What are the implications of my argument (What if I'm right? What if I'm right and people ignore me?)
If I'm right, people will use internet anonymously. It will develop the democracy of the country. If I'm right and people ignore me, freedom of expression will be ignored.

My Narration

Anonymity is not something which was invented with the internet. Anonymity is developed through the history. It has been used in many purposes. A well-known person did not use a real name to write messages, where the person does not want people's preconception of the real author color their perception of the message. As the users of the internet increase, the adverse effects of internet increase. - verbal violation, defamination and distribution of illegal information. The government considered that internet anonymity is the most biggest factor of these situation. For that reason, The Department Of Justice added the article of name verification in information communications network law. However,  In 2010, the constitutinal court of Korea gave a verdict that internet anonymity is conflicted with the constitution of Korea. They argued that they recognize legitimacy of purpose of the legislation and suitability of way, but the law limited the freedom of expression.
In constitution of Korea, there is article that the government should guarantee freedom of expression. They said that there is no specific public interest effect to justify the limitation of freedom of expression, which is the value of constitution.

Week 6. Introduction

Many people are in the circumstance of internet and influenced by the cyberplace. Students research the data on the internet for their homework. A girl does internet shopping to buy her new clothes. Midle-aged couple book a ticket of play for their wedding anniversary. Internet takes a great part of life nowadays without distinction of sex or age. There are many conflicting arguments about internet anonymity : interenet anonymity is beneficial or harmful. Actually, internet anonymity has more benefits than side-effects and it is needed in Korea.

1. Attention grabber

I grabbed the attention of audience by suggesting examples to show how internet takes important part in our lives. Then I pointed out that cyberculture, especially interent anonymity becomes issue today.

2. Explains the topic

I suggested the definition of internet anonymity and conflicting arguments of internet anonymity.

3. My thesis

I think it is clear and simple thesis.

South Korean Court Rejects Online Name Verification Law
http://www.nytimes.com/2012/08/24/world/asia/south-korean-court-overturns-online-name-verification-law.html?_r=0

What I hope to learn from this topic

I want to give readers background knowledge that Korea already rejects online name verification law and acknowledges the importance of internet anonymity.

Note

SEOUL, South Korea — In a major victory for free speech activists in South Korea, a top court on Thursday ruled unconstitutional a law that required Internet users to verify their identity before posting comments on major local Web sites.
South Korea introduced the so-called real-name identification system in 2007 for nearly 150 popular Web sites with more than 100,000 visitors a day, including some newspaper sites.
The regulation was adopted amid widespread concern that Internet users were deluging Web sites with malicious and defamatory comments and false rumors; in a few cases, such statements were blamed in the suicides of celebrities.
But free-speech advocates condemned the rule, arguing that the government was using perceived abuses as a convenient excuse to discourage political criticism. They feared that people would censor themselves rather than provide their names, which would make it easier for the government to find and possibly punish them.
On Thursday, an eight-judge Constitutional Court panel unanimously ruled that the restriction violated the right to free speech.
“Restriction on freedom of expression can be justified only when it is clear that it benefits public interests,” the court said in its verdict. “It’s difficult to say that the regulation is achieving public interests.”
Under President Lee Myung-bak, the government’s crackdown on Internet freedom has merited rebukes not just from free speech advocates at home, but also from the United Nations special rapporteur on freedom of expression and Reporters Without Borders, which said censorship was focused, in part, on political opinions.
But the government’s attempts to purge profanity and harsh criticisms of individuals on the Web has backing, especially among social conservatives who fear the Web is eating away at the social fabric, which values deference to elders and those in authority.
On Thursday, the court said there has not been a significant drop in the amount of illegal content posted on local Web sites since the law’s adoption. The ruling said the law discriminated against local Web sites, causing many South Korean users to patronize overseas-based Web sites or social networking services like Facebook and Twitter.
South Korean activists have filed a series of lawsuits against what they consider illegal barriers to freedom of speech. They won another major case in 2010, when the Constitutional Court killed a law that punished spreading “false rumors” online.

Final thoughts

I need more reasons that why Constitutinal Court rejected the online name verification law.

Week 3. Classical Argument Outline

1. The introduction

I will start by explaining the situation that cyberculture takes important part in our life in Korea, especially internet anonymity. Then I will shift attention to that internet anonymity is not always bad and it has benefits. I will end with my thesis, "Internet anonymity is needed in Korea."

2. The narration

I will give explanation that constitutional court gave a verdict that internet anonymity is unconstitutional. I will give some explanation of anonymity before internet and argue that anonymity is not something which was invented with the internet.

3. The confirmation

I will start by explaining how I will categorize the reasons why internet anonymity is needed in Korea. I will give explanation that internet anonymity is needed in Korea in constitutional way. I will suggest that internet anonymity is needed in Korea because it is matched with society of Korea.

4. The refutation and concession

I will concede that there are some side-effects of internet anonymity. However, the benefits of internet anonymity are more remarkable than the side-effects. I will give study that internet anonymity is not effective.

5. The summation

I will close with the mention that internet anonymity is helpful to freedom of expression. I will end with a reaffirmation of my thesis.

Week 3. Articulation

1) My argument
I want to argue that the internet anonymity is needed in Korea. People said that internet anonymity is harmful to korean society so we can not accept internet society. I want to say that internet anonymity not only has side effects but also beneficial points.

2) How I found my argument Explain how your research helped you find your argument. Or, in other words, how did your research evolve into your argument? Start with your research question.

My first research question was, when will my cellphone be smarter than my brain? It seems reasonable that eventually, as technology continues developing, our hand held devices will be smarter than our head held ones (Our brain). This article helped corroborate that theory. As I continued researching, it seemed obvious that everyone agreed that we were moving to a world where eventually humans would not be as smart as computers. I thought if I wrote an article saying the same thing, it would be boring. I started looking at the opposite perspective. How smart are people now? How amazing are our brains right now? Articles like this one helped me quantify the real power of our brain. Eventually I realized that even though neuroscientists think our brain is at its limits, it is still the most powerful tool out there. I think this is a fresh and interesting argument to make.

I wanted to find a topic related with 'The internet and Hieronymous Bosch : fear, protection, and liberty in cyberspace'. I thought about liberty in cyberspace should be

3) New research questions What do you still need to know? What is your research plan?
I have several questions that need to be resolved.
a) How can I compare the brain to a modern computer?
b) What areas are the brain objectively and obviously better at than computers?
c) What are the moral implications of possessing the most powerful "thought" apparatus in the world?
I'll continue browsing the internet and looking for interesting articles and keeping track of my research with blog posts.

4) Connections to the Harvard Sampler
This argument has connection to the Harvard Sampler. It is directly connected to 'The Internet and Hieronymus Bosch: Fear, Protection, and Liverty in Cyberspace'.

Week 2. Research Proposal

What is my current topic?
I want to research about internet anonymity in Korea. Internet anonymity has been a hot issue in worldwide. In Korea, there are also many arguments about internet anonymity.

*What are my guiding questions?
Is internet anonymity needed in Korea? Is internet anonymity good?

What are my current thoughts?
I already know that real-name ID system(online name verification) was found unconstitutional. Korea government put emphasis on the freedom of expression(freedom of speech and publication). I think internet anonymity is needed in Korea, but we should have regulation on it. I want to persuade people who think interent anonymity just has bad points.

What is the opposition?
My opponents will say that internet anonymity has so many problems and suggest example of side effects of interenet anonymity. I also think internet anonymity has some problems and its damage is so powerful,
